PING Proving Grounds Podcast Episode 4 With Sahith Theegala
Episode 4 of the PING Proving Grounds Podcast Features PGA Tour Player Sahith Theegala
Shane Bacon and Marty Jertson once again bring us enlightening insights on the PING Proving Grounds Podcast and this time they are joined by Sahith Theegala, a PGA Tour player. Theegala, who made his debut on the tour in 2022, has quickly gained recognition as a young, up-and-coming star. In this podcast episode, he shares his golf journey from his youth to his college and professional careers.
Youth Golf
During his childhood, Theegala achieved remarkable success, winning three Junior Worlds titles before the age of ten. Only Tiger Woods has won more Junior Worlds championships. Despite his impressive accolades at a young age, Theegala lacked confidence in his game. He attributed his success to being physically larger than his peers. However, as he progressed through high school, his competitors experienced growth spurts and made significant improvements in their game. While Theegala continued to improve, it wasn’t at the same rate as his peers, and he was no longer the standout golfer he once was. He admits that he wasn’t even considered a strong recruit after high school. Nevertheless, he embarked on Division 1 collegiate golf career at Pepperdine University.
Collegiate Career
Before choosing Pepperdine, Theegala considered larger schools but decided against them because he would have been a walk-on player. Pepperdine turned out to be a blessing for him, especially because he would have the opportunity to start immediately. His college career marked a turning point, helping him overcome the slump he experienced in high school. During his time at Pepperdine, Theegala took his fitness to a new level, embracing workouts for the first time in his life. He shares his experience of learning basic exercises as a college athlete and how it contributed to keeping his body in shape and preventing injuries. Despite his renewed success in college, Theegala still doubted his abilities and questioned whether he deserved to play at the next level.
Sahith Theegala’s PGA Tour Journey
Theegala turned professional in 2020 but didn’t join the PGA Tour until 2022. He began his professional career on the Korn Ferry Tour, a developmental tour where top performers earn spots on the PGA Tour. Theegala excelled on the Korn Ferry Tour and eventually earned his place on the PGA Tour in 2022. Since joining the tour, he has participated in 68 events, achieved 12 top-ten finishes, 7 top-five finishes, one third-place finish, and two runner-up finishes. Although he has yet to secure his first win, Theegala’s future looks promising as he stands among the tour’s emerging young stars.
The PING Proving Grounds Podcast delivers yet another captivating episode that delves deep into the world of golf.
